Southern African Natural Gas Advisory Service Service
ABOUT SANGAS
NEED FOR NATURAL GAS ADVISORY SITE FOR SOUTHERN AFRICA
The Southern African Natural Gas Advisory Service (SANGAS), that is a none profit free public information web site, is motivated for the following reasons by the independent service provider:
Natural gas is coming to Southern Africa on a large scale sooner rather than later.
Natural gas should greatly benefit the people, national economies and environment of Southern Africa so it needs to be embraced promptly and professionally.
Experience and knowledge of natural gas is limited in Southern Africa as are reliable and independent local sources of information on the subject - it is hoped that this web site service that is geared to the needs of the SADC Region will provide a readily accessible and convenient free resource that will assist with this situation.
The Southern African energy supply sector needs greater competition, access to relevant information for energy users, greater public participation; and, increased transparency. Natural gas is currently under represented and reported in the region in comparison with other energy supply sectors such as coal, nuclear, electricity, renewable energy and liquid fuels. It is hoped the website will assist in rectifying this situation.
Crucial energy policy and long term investment decisions are being made at this very moment about future energy provision, especially electricity, nuclear and renewable energies, by Governments and other agencies in Southern Africa. These decisions will impact the lives of the citizens, energy users and taxpayers of the region for generations to come, so they must be wise, prudent and well informed decisions. They must be impartial, objective and based on a balanced comparative appraisal of all energy supply options including their merits, cost, environmental impacts and ultimate quality and safety of service to energy users in Southern Africa and beyond. These options of necessity must also urgently include natural gas, especially with the recent major natural gas discoveries in the region.
Southern African media personnel involved with newspapers, journals, radio and television will be able to access relevant natural gas reference material via the web site to assist with their accurate reporting of energy matters.
Things are developing rapidly with natural gas throughout the world and in Southern Africa. The use of this popular fuel is expanding across the globe and it is also being discovered in large quantities throughout Southern Africa. It is vital that as well as exporting natural gas that it is also deployed wisely for the socioeconomic development of Southern Africa and the benefit of all local citizens. It also has a major and urgent role to play in redressing many energy related environmental challenges facing the region.
Natural gas is a regional energy asset of the Southern African Region and needs to be understood and developed within this context.
Future generations of South Africans need to know about natural gas so the website also aims to be a learning resource available to Southern African teachers and students.
